Pivot Power has appointed EDF to optimise 49.9MW of battery assets at their Kemsley site in Kent, helping to facilitate greater flexible electricity capacity for the grid.

Pivot Power (part of EDF Renewables) specialises in battery storage and power infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging. Kemsley is the first of two projects due to be commissioned in early 2021 and is part of a nationwide portfolio of 40 sites. These sites will be connected to the high-voltage transmission network and will provide up to 2GW of flexible capacity to integrate more renewable energy and support the UK’s net zero commitment.

As the UK continues to set new records for renewable generation, the need for flexible capacity is growing. Battery storage is a cost-effective and proven technology which helps to increase system resilience and balance electricity supply and demand.

With many years’ experience trading in the UK market, EDF is helping Britain achieve net zero through its industry-leading battery optimisation capabilities. This partnership will allow Pivot Power to maximise revenues for their Kemsley battery asset via EDF’s PowerShift platform, across the following areas: ancillary services, wholesale optimisation and balancing mechanism.

Stuart Fenner, Commercial Lead at EDF, says: “EDF is a global leader as a developer, owner and optimiser of distributed energy assets with industry leading technical and commercial expertise. Our colleagues at Pivot Power are developing some of the most exciting projects in the country and we are very proud to be a key part of their success.”

Matt Allen, CEO of Pivot Power, says: “To accelerate a green recovery and meet its net zero target, the UK needs to invest in low carbon infrastructure. Our battery portfolio will help future-proof the UK’s energy system, giving it the essential flexibility to manage growing levels of solar and wind power whilst also supporting the adoption of EVs. We’re excited to be working with EDF’s PowerShift platform to bring our Kemsley battery project to life and help build a low carbon electric future.”

Pivot Power is a wholly owned subsidiary of EDF Renewables UK that was acquired in 2019 as part of its strategy to accelerate its development of battery storage and EV charging.
